FULL REVIEW
I’am lazy to rewrite this review I had from before so yeah, its unedited!
Game Information:
Terraria is often compared to Minecraft due to same sandbox genre but their sandbox elements differ by a ton, while Minecraft plays on players creativity terraria has more to offer, classes, building, boss fighting etc. While terraria is 2D it has much more content to discover than Minecraft, more unique sprites and feel to the world, battle mechanics and weapons which by far surpass those of Minecraft. Although I would say many people like to compare them, they are completely different and should not be compared. They fill in different niches, if you like flat but unique feeling progression with world which has amazing soundtracks and visual details you will like terraria!
Gameplay Mechanics:
Terraria is all about progression and exploration. the player begins with only a few basic tools and a randomly generated world. The game barely tells you how to progress besides having an npc named guide, he will nudge you in the right direction and will tell you how to craft items with materials you already have. Although learning curve is a bit steep at first games progression is relatively flat, with the need to collect specific gear and reaching certain bosses to continue, which can open access to more resources which gives a sense of accomplishment.
Another important aspect is combat system, starting simple with just swinging copper sword in front of you to shooting a beam of concentrated light – burning down every enemy on your way. Movement feels very cranky at the beginning but when gaining movement gear, it becomes pleasant and less annoying.
In terraria you have choice to progress as different classes such as melee, summoner, mage and ranger or even mixed one. This greatly increases the fun of the play through as every class has their own strengths and weaknesses.
Visual and Audio Design:
Terraria embraces retro pixel art style that perfectly compliments its gameplay. The worlds are vivid, colourful and full of intricate details. Biomes have unique theme music and background art, which is very pleasing, some of the soundtracks being very iconic such as “Mushrooms,” such a funky beat! Most bosses have their own unique sounds too which enhances experience of fighting with them.
Personal Experience:
For the first time I got terraria by getting my dad to pirate random games for me to play, over the years I bought it multiple times for steam, Xbox and my little brother. This led to amazing journey of many years, I have been on and off about terraria with currently having 800+ play hours on steam, but it is always going to be valued highly in my mind. The game can be insanely fun with friends and alone depending on your play style. Terraria has great replay-ability, with lots of content in base game, yet you can always check out TmodLoader to change the game with amazing mods made by the community, some of the highlights would be “overhaul,” “thorium” and “calamity”. Even after completing the main progression, I found myself returning to the game to try new builds, designs and class builds or simply explore with friends. Terraria has kept me invested for hours and did so effortlessly!
Summary:
For low price of ten dollars, I believe this game is absolutely worth it if you are interested in well thought through progression. Hidden indie gem which gained immense popularity for how great it is. Although terraria will not suit everyone with how nerdy you must be to progress, yet I believe it’s charming and it is definitely worth a try, come on it is 5 Euro on a sale, you can afford it. In the end personally I really recommend getting terraria, it is not rated so high for no reason.
Rating: 9/10 – nearly flawless indie gem, proving it with test of time.
my qualification for the review
